Kriya (Verb) 1 - Classes 1 - 6

 

The grammatical terms e.g, Sangya (uke)- naming words (Noun), Kriya (dke) – action words (Verbs). Visheshan (fo”ks’k xq.k)- describing words (Adjectives) etc …. should be introduced skillfully because kids, in general, are scared of these formal terms of grammar. They should always be introduced in the play-way/practical method.

The basic aim of teaching any subject is that kids should enjoy the learning process, should retain the knowledge, and make practical use of it.

Pronunciation of Swar Vyanjan - Vyanjan (क/च/ट वर्ग) 3

This is in continuation of the requested topic of pronunciation of Hindi alphabets and words.

In this post, I’m uploading the pictorial worksheets of vyanjans क/च group of words with the symbols of IPA/Transliteration.

Again I’ll emphasize that these signs are just for extra information to help with the sounds of the alphabets/words.

It has not been an easy task creating ‘Barah Khadi’ worksheets. If you come across any typing error please leave a comment pointing out the error.

I hope these pictorial worksheets are helpful in teaching the kids how to pronounce the Hindi words.

Pronunciation of Swar Vyanjan - Swar 2

This is the second post on the requested topic of the pronunciation of Hindi alphabets and words. I am uploading the pictorial worksheets based on varnamala – Swar.

The words corresponding with each alphabet (Swar) are easy to follow with symbols. These symbols are just for extra information to help you understand the sound of these alphabets/words.

I have tried to make the pronunciation simple with the help of IPA/ Transliteration symbols.

I am hoping that these pictorial worksheets would be helpful in teaching the kids how to pronounce the Hindi words.

Pronunciation of Swar, Vyanjan, Barah Khadi - 1

 

This is a post on the pronunciation of Hindi vowels (Swar), consonants (Vyanjan) and Hindi words. 

Many subscribers requested this particular topic to help them teach their English speaking kids.

Hindi is highly phonetic; the pronunciation of any Hindi word can be reliably predicted from their written form which is in strong contrast to English.

I have uploaded the worksheets of Swar (Vowels) and Consonants (Vyanjans) and Barah Khadi  (बारह खड़ी) in this post.

In these worksheets I have used IPA symbols along with transliteration to help in pronouncing alphabets/words of Hindi.

It is important to be able to distinguish between short and long vowels for correct pronunciation because these vowels, in combination with consonants are used to form words.

It is important to note that many consonants which are part of Hindi language do not exist in English.

I am also sharing the link of Wikipedia which has audio files of all the Devanagari letters, just an added information to help in pronouncing the Swar and Vyanjan.

Conjunct consonants (Sanyukt Vyanjan) (र - रेफ़/पदेन का प्रयोग) - 4

This is the fourth post on Conjunct consonants. Many subscribers requested this particular topic of संयुक्ताक्षर – र (रेफ़/पदेन)का प्रयोग, to be discussed in detail and wanted some worksheets for the practice.

In the case of conjunct consonants alphabet r/र has a different rule to follow.

(A)Whenever a half Vyanjan(स्वर रहित)- alphabets with a standing line( T ), is joined to r/र, it is reduced in size, and a short-stroke is attached below the line of the vyanjan. It is known as ‘पदेन’ meaning पैरों पर  लगा हुआ.

   e.g. –

     

क् + र – क्र  -  क् + र + म   – क्रम, 

ग् + र – ग्र  -  ग् + र + ह    - ग्रह

प् + र – प्र  -   प् + र + बल  - प्रबल

ब् + र ब्र    -  ब् + र + ज    - ब्रज

 

when we pronounce these conjunct consonants the sound of r/र comes after the half Vyanjan (स्वर रहित).

 

(B) र  as half vyanjan र् (स्वर रहित) is called रेफ़ in Hindi grammar.

 र्  appears in between the alphabets of a word, and र् takes an upward curve form above the next Vyanjan. e.g. –

 

र् + म – र्म - क + र् + म – कर्म

र् + च – र्च – ख + र् + च - खर्च

र् + द – र्द –  स + र् + द - सर्द  

 It is to be noted that no word starts with र् (रेफ़), it always appears in between the alphabets of a word.

(C)  With ट् (ta), ठ् (tha), ड् (da), ढ् (dha) छ् (cha), र appears as 

(  ª)  below the Vyanjan. e.g. –

ट् + र – ट्र - ट् + र + क – ट्रक

ड् + र – ड्र, - ड् + र + म – ड्रम

 

(D) Whenever a half Vyanjan (स्वर रहित) त् is joined to र, it is reduced in size, and a short-stroke is attached to the vyanjan त .        

त् + र – त्र

त् + र + स – त्रस

त् + रे + ता – त्रेता

मा + त् + रा - मात्रा

Conjunct Consonants (Sanyukt Vyanjan) may appear complex but with little practice and fun, kids can master it.

Number (वचन) ( 2) - Primary Classes 4,5,6

 

In the first post on Vachan(number) for classes 1,2,3 I’d only taken up the masculine gender(पुल्लिंग) words ending with the matra ‘आ’. It follows a simple rule, the matra ‘आ’is replaced by matra ए.

In this second post on Vachan (Number) I’ve taken up the other masculine/feminine gender words ending with different matras. Each worksheet has the rule written above the examples.
